Normal Study1,176 questionsPage 1/48

The Physics bank contains close to 1,200 published questions pitched at the FSc and general-graduate level that appears in recruitment tests and entry exams. Optics is the largest topic, covering reflection, refraction, lenses and the behaviour of light, followed by thermodynamics, nuclear physics and the SI units and dimensions of physical quantities. Electric circuits, work and energy, and electricity and magnetism complete the main clusters.

Unlike the Everyday Science section, some questions here expect you to apply a formula: the resistance of resistors in series, the energy of a falling body, or the unit of a derived quantity from its dimensions. The explanations show the relationship used and the substitution, so they double as a compact revision of the formula sheet. Dimensional analysis is a favourite of examiners because it can be asked without any numbers at all, and the bank has a good number of those questions. Candidates preparing for MDCAT or ECAT will find the level familiar.

Sound waves travel faster in which type of medium?

Correct answer: A

A
Dense
Correct
B
Cold
C
Hot
D
None of these
Explanation and memory cue

Sound waves travel fastest in media that are more rigid (have higher elasticity or bulk modulus) and have lower density. In general, sound travels fastest in solids, slower in liquids, and slowest in gases. Among gases, temperature also affects the speed of sound, with higher temperatures increasing the speed. However, when comparing media types, density and elasticity dominate. Dense solids like steel or glass allow sound to travel much faster than in less dense media like air. Therefore, sound waves travel faster in denser media (like solids) compared to less dense media (like gases).

Energy in a nuclear reaction is produced due to?

Correct answer: B

A
Uncontrolled Chain Reaction
B
Controlled Reaction
Correct
C
Medium
D
None of these
Explanation and memory cue

Energy in a nuclear reaction is produced due to a controlled chain reaction, where the rate of fission is carefully regulated to release energy steadily and safely, such as in nuclear reactors. Control rods and moderators adjust the number of neutrons available to sustain the reaction at a steady rate. An uncontrolled chain reaction leads to an exponential increase in fission events, causing a rapid and potentially destructive release of energy, as seen in nuclear weapons, not sustained energy production.

A steel pin sinks in water while a far bigger ship floats because:

Correct answer: B

A
It displaces more water than its weight
B
It displaces less water than its weight
Correct
C

The moment about a point P(0,0,0) of the force 𝐅=2𝐢−𝐣−𝐤 applied at Q(1,1,1) is:

Correct answer: C

A
3i - 3j
B
3j + 3k
C
3j - 3k
Correct
D
None of these
Explanation and memory cue

The moment (torque) about point P is calculated by the cross product r × F, where r is the position vector from P to Q (1i + 1j + 1k) and F = 2i - j - k. The cross product yields (3j - 3k), which corresponds to option C.

The work done by a force 𝐅=𝐢+𝐣+𝐤 in moving an object from point P(1,1,1) to point Q(1,2,2) is:

Correct answer: B

A
1
B
2
Correct
C
0
D
None of these
Explanation and memory cue

The displacement vector from point P(1,1,1) to point Q(1,2,2) is calculated as Q - P = (1-1, 2-1, 2-1) = (0, 1, 1). The force vector is given as F = (1, 1, 1). The work done by the force is the dot product of the force vector and the displacement vector: W = F · displacement = (1)(0) + (1)(1) + (1)(1) = 0 + 1 + 1 = 2. Therefore, the correct answer is 2, which corresponds to option B.

The force exerted by a uniform electric field on a dipole is:

Correct answer: D

A
Parallel to Dipole Moment
B
Perpendicular to the Dipole Moment
C
Parallel to the Electric Field
D
None of these
Correct
Explanation and memory cue

In a uniform electric field, the forces on the two opposite charges of an electric dipole are equal in magnitude and opposite in direction, resulting in zero net force on the dipole. However, these forces create a torque that tends to align the dipole moment with the electric field. The torque is given by τ→=p→×E→, where p→ is the dipole moment and E→ is the electric field. Since the net force is zero, the force is not perpendicular or parallel to the dipole moment; rather, there is no net force at all. Therefore, the correct answer is D (None of these).

The approximation in which the original length is very small compared to the final stretched length is?

Correct answer: C

A
Elastic Approximation
B
Non-Elastic Approximation
C
Slinky Approximation
Correct
D
None of these
Explanation and memory cue

The term 'Slinky Approximation' is used in physics modeling of slinkies to describe the approximation where the natural (unstretched) length of the slinky is very small compared to its stretched length under gravity. This is also called the 'perfectly elastic' approximation. Under this approximation, the unstretched length is negligible, and the tension in the slinky can be treated as approximately constant horizontally. This leads to simplified equations describing the slinky's stretched length and behavior. This approximation is characteristic of slinkies because their coils are tightly packed when unstretched, making the original length very small compared to the stretched length. Therefore, the 'Slinky Approximation' correctly refers to the scenario where the original length is very small compared to the final stretched length, matching option C. The other options like 'Elastic Approximation' or 'Non-Elastic Approximation' are not standard terms used to describe this scenario.

What is the shortest wavelength for audible sound?

Correct answer: B

A
0.7 cm
B
1.7 cm
Correct
C
1.6 cm
D
None of these
Explanation and memory cue

The audible frequency range for humans is approximately 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz. The shortest wavelength corresponds to the highest frequency, which is 20,000 Hz. Using the speed of sound in air as approximately 340 m/s, the wavelength is calculated by the formula wavelength = speed / frequency. Thus, wavelength = 340 m/s / 20,000 Hz = 0.017 m = 1.7 cm. Therefore, the correct answer is option B (1.7 cm). The original explanation had the correct calculation but incorrectly marked option C (1.6 cm) as the answer. The correct answer should be B.

A wire has a resistance of 6 ohms. It is cut into two equal parts, and both halves are connected in parallel. What is the new resistance?

Correct answer: C

A
R/2
B
R/3
C
R/4
Correct
D
None of these
Explanation and memory cue

When a wire of resistance R is cut into two equal halves, each half has resistance R/2. Connecting these two halves in parallel results in a combined resistance of (R/2 * R/2) / (R/2 + R/2) = R/4. Since the original resistance is 6 ohms, the new resistance is 6/4 = 1.5 ohms, which corresponds to option C (R/4).

Physics: common questions

How much calculation is involved?

Some, but it is light. Most questions are conceptual or single-step: apply one formula, convert one unit, or identify the correct law. Nothing requires more than a few lines of arithmetic, and no question assumes a calculator, which matches the conditions of the tests these questions come from.

Which physics topics dominate?

Optics, thermodynamics, nuclear physics and units of measurement are the four largest. Together they account for roughly a hundred questions. Electric circuits and electricity and magnetism follow, and questions about famous physicists and their discoveries are scattered across several topics.

Is this suitable for MDCAT or ECAT preparation?

The level is comparable, and the topics overlap heavily with those syllabi. The bank was assembled mainly from job-test papers, though, so it does not follow the MDCAT chapter order and will not replace a textbook. Use it as a self-test after you have covered a chapter elsewhere.
